Introducing Dr. Mary Miller!

Dr. Mary Miller joins Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus’ team as our first Literacy Initiative Coordinator.

When she’s not chasing around her two dogs or 9-month old son, Mary Miller can be found amidst a flurry of neon post-its, designing our pilot literacy program. Mary joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus team as our first Literacy Initiative Coordinator, tasked with the goal of having all 6-8 year olds reading at grade level.

Mary received her PhD in education from The Ohio State University in May. In the same month, she enthusiastically jumped into her new position. Mary’s position allows her to realize her vision of connecting children with reading in innovative ways. Contrary to the traditional approach to literacy, Mary’s vision is multimodal – it includes responding to books by incorporating art and technology and also developing the ability to understand how to read and discuss online content, films, television, and artwork.

“I think that expanding the literacy offerings of Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus helps our members find reflections of themselves in books and media. I want our members to be able to develop the tools to express themselves through both writing and art,” Mary says of the new program.  From teaching language arts to elementary students to educating pre-service teachers at OSU, her range with in-school and afterschool education have equipped her with the knowledge and passion to design the initiative. In the words of Doug Wolfe, Chief Strategy Officer, “Mary’s expertise and experience allows Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus to enhance our existing literacy programs and build a more comprehensive literacy strategy that ensures successful outcomes for all of our members. We’re thrilled to have her on the team.”

Mary’s interests include enjoying good food (without having to cook it), animals, and the Columbus Crew. Her favorite book is One Hundred Years of Solitude and her favorite children’s books are the Harry Potter series. Welcome to the team, Mary!
