Lowe’s Heroes Donates Club Renovation
15 Lowe’s stores from the Columbus area pool resources, time, and talent to renovate the J. Ashburn Jr. Boys & Girls Club.
At 7:30 on Tuesday morning at the J. Ashburn Jr. Boys & Girls Club, Lowe’s volunteers piled out of their vehicles, threw on a crisp white shirt, and gathered around the back of the building. After some remarks from head Lowe’s representatives and Boys & Girls Clubs staff on the influence of their volunteer project, the army of seventy took over the property for two days. This incredible transformation ranged from new flooring, to painting, to furniture, to flat screen TVs.
The project began in March when a Lowe’s stores manager, James, took the initiative to tour a Club. Upon witnessing the impact that the Club was having on the area, he collaborated with all regional stores to create a project through “Lowe’s Heroes,” a program that encourages Lowe’s employees to give their time, talent, and resources to the community. In the words of Jeff Decker, Market Director for Central Ohio, “Lowe’s Heroes is a group of people…a family of Lowe’s associates that cares about their community and want the members of the community to love where they live.”
Volunteers came from across the city and as far as Heath and Zanesville to transform a large storage room into a dance room, renovate the multipurpose room into a more practical space for meals, academic time, and recreation, and update the Kiwanis Library with new furniture, flooring, and risers. They also outfitted the lobby with more functional furniture, created storage space for the members’ belongings with cubbies and coat racks, mounted two flat screen TVs in the teen center, and provided landscaping for the property.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Columbus is looking forward to these changes creating a more accessible space for academic and athletic programming. The improvements will provide a safe and welcoming environment for Club members and increase the capacity of the site. It will also encourage the local community to take advantage of the incredible facility, ensuring that more youth have the path to Great Futures.
